Oh no, don't worry! We agree that (well...I agree...Sheila is still learning the cult of medium and rare meat) that a pink burger is darn tasty. I just have reseravations about not knowing where the meat comes from. In Oshawa, Teddy's does a killer burger that you can get medium or rare, and I'm more than okay with it because they grind the meat on-site. I'm just not keen on eating a burger that pink without knowing that it could be um...less than good quality ground beef (I think I covered it better on Facebook with someone on a caption of the pink burger pic...but we just recorded an ep on Anthony Bourdain's book "Medium Rare" and he has a chapter on burgers that states it way better than I ever could)

I did not intend to hold Harvey's up as high-quality, but as far as fastfood goes, they're a sight better than McD's or Burgerthing. I'll still stand by Mr. Burger as being a superb, fast-food style burger, though....it's all in the bun, to be honest. It's not close to a good pub-burger (Oh, Willie Stouts, you have set the bar high!), but it's better than the aforementioned fast food joints (a pox on both your arches!).

Thanks for the info on Burger Priest! We will definitely check it out next time we're in the city...and thanks for the feedback...even if you do like american cheese slices on burgers. ;) (just teasin')

Hi gals,
1) I haven't been to Patty Shack and now that I've heard your review I definitely will.
2) However, just a counter-point for your listeners, when it comes to us crazy burger aficionados, both loosely packed meat AND leaving a little pink, are both very much sought-after. And most of us would chuckle at the idea of Harveys or Mr. Burger being held up as high-quality burger destinations.
When it comes to burger fans, the gold standard at present in southern ontario is universally agreed to be The Burger's Priest (2 locations in Toronto), and they loosely pack the meat, use american cheese slices, and will cook your greasy, delicious, burger a nice pinky medium :-)
That said, Patty Shack sounds awesome, and I am not personally a huge FiveGuys fan mostly because the brand of cheese slices used are not my fave, and The Priest just does it all better, but greasy seared flat-top burgers with caramelized onions, american cheese, on white buns are awesome - just sayin' :-)
Cheers,
.James.

This is a great review, thanks chickies :) I work at Out Lounge and I remember serving you two that first visit you talked about with the wings and the philly cheesesteak poutine. I am the one who says yay and claps when people order it haha, my favourite. Glad you enjoy everything so much....on a sad note we no longer have the entire breakfast menu anymore, there was not enough of a breakfast crowd when we used to open at 8am for all the prep work it was for our lovely kitchen staff (including 6 different colored pancake batters lol). We do however still have an all day breakfast special on weekends: 3 eggs any style with choice of toast, bacon or sausage and homefries $6.99. Hope to see you both again soon!

I, too, used to think he was just a great big d-bag (this is Tracy, BTW), but the book convinced me otherwise. He really cares about cooking, food, and isn't an ass if you care, too. I still disagree with him on a few points, but after reading the book I gained a lot of respect for him.

If you're referring to the 2008 study from Harvard (Mental Health something, I think?), I think we still pretty much think the same as before on hookahs. The catch with that study is they assumed that the hookah smoker actually inhales. Since neither one of us really inhale much, if at all, and use them in extreme moderation (though we haven't gotten to smoke one in a while - insert frowny face here), we kind of pooh-pooh the study. I've taken a look at this (this is Tracy, BTW), and I'm not overly sure I really trust it. So many tobacco studies for burned tobacco products other than cigarettes make the assumption that inhalation occurs, so they get different results.

Tobacco, like so many things in life, is a thing for moderation. Having a hookah a day may not be the greatest thing for you, but one a week or so, and you'll probably going to be just fine. It's just like butter - too much of it, all the time, and you're cruising for a heart attack. A little bit in moderation, and you're good to go.

I hope that answers your question. If you're referring to another study, please toss out a link. I'd love to take a look if there's some new data out there. And I dream of the day when medical researchers accept the fact that not everyone inhales things like hookahs, cigars, and pipes and they gear their research to such things.

If you’re referring to the 2008 study from Harvard (Mental Health something, I think?), I think we still pretty much think the same as before on hookahs. The catch with that study is they assumed that the hookah smoker actually inhales. Since neither one of us really inhale much, if at all, and use them in extreme moderation (though we haven’t gotten to smoke one in a while - insert frowny face here), we kind of pooh-pooh the study. I’ve taken a look at this (this is Tracy, BTW), and I’m not overly sure I really trust it.
